【傾向】trendとtendencyの違い

仕事中、「傾向」を表す単語 "trend" と "tendency" の違いが気になり調べたのでここに書いておきます！

Cambridge Dictionaryという英英辞典で調べてみました。

Trend

a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving:

「状況や人の振る舞い方の進展、変化」

この単語には、もう一つ意味がありました。

a new development in clothing, make-up, etc.:

「衣服や化粧などの新しい進展」。いわゆるファッションのことですね。

個人のことを言うのではなく、社会、グループ、集団の傾向を指すときに使うと言えそうです。また、もともとある性質というよりはその集団の動いていく方向を表すとき、この単語を使うのが一番適切かもしれません。

例文

There is a trend away from reading books.

読書離れの傾向がある。

There's been a upward trend in sales in the last few years.

直近数年で売り上げ増加傾向がある。

Spring fashion trends are expected to favor pastel shades.

春のファッション傾向はパステルカラーを好むことが予想される。

Tendency

If someone has a tendency to do or like something, they will probably do it or like it:

「もし誰かが何かをするとか何かが好きという傾向(tendency)があるならその人はおそらくそれをし、好む」

If there is a tendency for something to happen, it is likely to happen or it often happens:

「もし何かが起こる傾向(tendency)があるなら、それは起こりうるか、よく起こる」

If there is a tendency to do something, it starts to happen more often or starts to increase:

「もし何かをする傾向(tendency)があるなら、それはより頻繁に起こり始め、増え出す。」

個人の嗜好や行動についても言うことができるみたいです。

例文

Her tendency to be critical made her unpopular with his co-workers.

彼女の批判的な傾向によって、彼女は同僚から人気がなくなった。

There is an increasing tendency for women to have children later in life.

より多くの女性がより後年になってから子供を産む傾向がある。
